In a car, a strut is a shock absorber that is integrated into a shock mount assembly together with the coil spring and top mount. The strut is attached to the vehicle’s body or frame via a top shock mount. The front top shock mounts are frequently visible beneath the hood of cars. They are also referred to as strut mounts.
Functions of shock mounts
They must first maintain the stability of the struts and lessen some of the shocks caused by road imperfections.
Second, some front strut mounts on cars contain strut mount bearings that enable the front wheel to rotate alongside it while turning left or right.
Third, strut mounts must offer adequate insulation; otherwise, road vibrations and noise will be transmitted from the struts through the body of the car and into the cabin. Because of this, strut mounts feature a rubber cushion so that the strut and the body don’t come into contact with one another. Strut mounts don’t require any upkeep. Unless they are worn out or have another issue, they don’t need to be changed.
Symptoms of bad shock mounts
- Clunking or rattling noise
- Popping or creaking noise when turning the steering wheel at slow speeds
- Additionally, strut mounts are changed if they exhibit considerable corrosion or if the visible rubber component is torn or severely worn.
In some cars, a strut mount bearing comes with the strut mount as one unit; in other cars, it can be replaced separately.
