Although they serve similar purposes, brake shoes and pads are not the same things. They are also known as brake linings.
A disc braking system includes brake pads. The term “disc brake” refers to a system in which brake pads are compressed together by a caliper against a rotor disc. The friction required to stop the car is produced by the pads pressing on the rotor.
A drum braking system includes brake linings. The crescent-shaped brake shoes have a rough friction surface on one side. They are contained within a brake drum. The brake linings are thrust outward when the brake pedal is depressed, pressing on the brake drum’s interior and slowing the wheel.
Drum brakes and brake linings are vintage braking system components that are becoming less frequent on contemporary cars. However, because drum brakes are less expensive to manufacture, some car models will have them on the back wheels.
BRAKE SHOE REPLACEMENT DATE
Brake linings won’t last forever, despite the fact that they might not need maintenance as regularly as brake pads. Brake shoes must also be changed on a regular basis to prevent problems with your braking system or, even worse, brake failure. Even though certain brake linings are made to endure for many thousand kilometres, your driving style, the state of the road, and the weather can all shorten the lifespan of your braking parts, whether you have disc brakes, drum brakes, or both!
